Facebook provides a way to instantly change the categorization of your Facebook business page. Businesses that operate as a community page are missing several details that visitors to your page need to know.



Community pages have limited fields that only provide information about your website, start date, an about field and basic description. Learning about the different options available for your business can help you make a better decision and classify your page in a way that provides the greatest benefit to your customers.

Choosing a Page Category

The category you choose determines the type of pages you can have. As of 2012, there are 11 categories from which to choose. Categories most appropriate for businesses include "Companies & Organizations" and "Local Businesses." The main difference between these two categories involves the display of certain types of information to users. Pages categorized as local businesses have options to provide business hours and parking information. Company & organization pages do not provide business hours and parking information, instead they provide additional fields for a mission statement, founding information, awards and products. Additional fields are also available depending on the classification selected within the category.

Choosing a Page Group

Page groups are subsets of page categories. After you select an appropriate category for your business, you must select a group that further defines your business. The page group setting allows you to refine how your business appears in search results and gives more accurate and effective search results for Facebook users. If you choose to register your business as a local business, you can select specific types of businesses from a list that includes bookstore, movie theater, library and others. Companies and organizations choose from more general industry listings such as consulting/business services, small business, political party and others.

Changing Settings

To change your Facebook page from a community category to a business category, log in to Facebook as a page administrator to access your Admin Panel. Click the "Edit Page" tab, "Update Info" and "Basic Information." Choose a category for your business in the first drop-down menu and select the group in the adjacent drop-down menu. Click "Save Changes" to apply the new settings to your page.

Basic Information

After changing your Facebook page category, you may need to provide additional information about your business. You can change your page name only if fewer than 200 people have liked the page. You can also set a search engine-friendly URL for your page if you haven't already set one. When filling out the information about your business, provide as much information as possible to make your Facebook page useful for your visitors. Both the Company & Organization and Local Businesses categories provide options to list your company start date, the start-up type and location information for the company.
